For all people to access every possible opportunity, we must have a way of trusting in each other, stranger-to-stranger, to assess and give merit to someone based on sound criteria while operating in an increasingly fragmented data landscape.
IDmeta believes that the best way for us to grow and expand, as an organisation or individual, is to be able to map a person based on their reputation or merit, and to let people discover and navigate to each other. In the absence of this, providers and consumers of services will continue to not be matched, limiting opportunities and access.
When you look at lending markets and wonder why they don’t extend all the way to emerging economies or ask why hiring markets don’t extend far beyond top universities, these are examples of market failures where a lack of trust infrastructure means demand and supply do not meet. This is to the detriment of all parties.
In The Republic, the philosopher Plato spoke about a meritocracy, which has been defined as a “system, organisation, or society in which people are chosen and moved into positions of success, power, and influence on the basis of their demonstrated abilities and merit.”
Most companies, academic institutions, sports teams at least try to be meritocratic. Outside of those specialised zones of merit, fixed attributes (where you were born, who your parents are, what your race is) become more relevant. This makes sense — in the absence of a trust infrastructure, the default is blunt pattern-matching.
For all people to match with opportunities, all markets must become meritocratic, or at least more meritocratic than they are today. There must be a trust infrastructure, developed on merit, that allows consumers and organisations to access a framework to overcome these outdated pattern matching methodologies.
Since the problem is in the data, the solution is in the data too. People are not “thin file”, it’s their recorded data that is thin.
At IDMeta, our merit-based system allows access to a borderless future, where everyone can establish and develop a trust infrastructure, and as a result, access more opportunities with a higher level of positive outcomes.
